William "Bill" Creighton Roberts

With deep sadness we grieve the death of William, Bill, Roberts. He passed away peacefully at the age of 88 at his Sacramento home on May 30, 2016, Memorial Day. His wife of 64 years, Jane, was at his side, along with daughter Cindy Roberts Yarber, granddaughter Caroline Vedder and husband Ross, and close family friend Becky Grunde. Daughter Annette Lesly, husband Jeff, granddaughter Carrissa Kompsi and husband, Shawn, arrived shortly after. Bill is also survived by his grandson, Willie Lesly, Nieces; Viola Spencer (Peter), Jenny Yates, Kathy Bellah, Lori Paschke (Jimmie), Pam Nelson (Steve), Denise Moon (Kevin), Nephews; David Roberts and Denton Todhunter, and Creighton Todhunter. Bill was born in Butte Falls, Oregon on March 11, 1928, to William T. and Adeline Roberts. His parents and four siblings preceded him in death; Roland Roberts, Mary Smith, Freda Bellah, and Howard Roberts. Bill served in the United States Air Force following high school and then worked as a lumberjack falling timber from the time of his discharge until 1962 when he left Ashland to work for Valley Elevator as an elevator mechanic in new construction. Bill worked on construction sites throughout Northern California retiring after 28 years and began raising kiwi on a small farm in Auburn, CA. After 36 years he and Jane moved to Sacramento to be closer to their daughters. Bill loved his farm, driving tractors, raising and bragging about his garden and kiwis, having family and friends for barbeques and holiday dinners. He was a strong and virile man with an innate knowledge of how to solve mechanical problems and keep his various farm implements in working order. He enjoyed life from riding motor cycles, flying airplanes, driving motorhomes, to attending swim meets and soccer games. He loved being with his grandchildren and family members and participating in their celebrations. Friends and their families were very important to Bill, he relished hearing about their jobs and activities and encouraged them to share their stories with him. A memorial service will be conducted on June 25, 2016, 11:00 AM, at the Town and Country Lutheran Church, 4049 Marconi Ave., Sacramento. A gathering for family and friends will follow at the Roberts’ home. Interment will be at a later date at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, CA.
